How To Upgrade To Windows 10 From Windows 7 or 8.1
Microsoft has released the Windows 10 operating system. The big update for Windows packs a powerful new Start menu, a User Interface that easily lets you switch between touch and mouse-friendly modes, Cortana and a lot of other amazing features.
Microsoft had earlier announced that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users running a genuine copy will be getting the Windows 10 upgrade for free. However the company later announced that it will be rolling out the update in phases, which means Windows 10 Insider members will get it first followed by Windows users.
But you can follow this tutorial on how to manually update your Windows 7 or Windows 8 system to Windows 10. But before you begin, make sure you have made a backup of all your files on cloud services like Microsoft’s One Drive, so that you can download them again if your computer crashes. You can even use Macrium Reflect, a disk imaging software that make a bit-by-bit copy of your hard drive.
Also make sure you have 1 to 2 hours of free time to complete the installation process.
Using Microsoft Download Tool
- First of all visit the link here.
- Now click on the download option for 32 or 64-bit Windows version. (Choose the one you currently have).
- Launch the Download Tool
- Click and Select the upgrade this PC now option if you want to install Windows 10 on the computer you are using or if you want you can even create your own bootable USB or DVD media. For that, you can check out the section below “How to create Windows 8 Install Media”.
This tool will now take a while to download, particularly if you have a slow internet connection. It may take about an hour or so, depending upon your internet connection speed.
- Now click on Accept in the license terms screen. Again the software will check for updates, this may take several minutes.
- Click on Install button and wait for 20 to 30 minutes for your PC to download and copy files. You system will reboot several times during the process.
- Click Next on the Login Screen.
- Now click on Use Express Settings. You can change that in future if you want.
- Click Next on the New apps for ne windows screen. Now the computer will finalize the settings and take you to the Windows 10 lock screen.
- Now finally Log in to your computer. This may take couple of minutes and will then present you with Windows desktop.
How to Create Windows 10 USB Installation Disk
For this, you will need to have a minimum of 4GB or larger USB flash drive or a blank DVD for creating your own Windows 10 installation disk. Having your won disk will allow you to run the upgrade on multiple computers without an hour for the fresh download.
Just Follow all the steps below:
- Follow the above given steps from 1-3 (Installing the Download tool and launching it).
- Select “Create installation media…”
- Select language, architecture and edition of Windows. But make sure, it is same as your current PC, like if you have Windows 8 Home (64-bit), select Windows 10 Home (64-bit).
- Now Select USB flash drive or DVD whatever you want. If you select the ISO file, at the end of the process, you will need to have a DVD burning program to write the ISO to disc.
- Click Finish when the process completes.
- Launch setup.exe on the flash drive to start with the upgrade process.
- Now Select “Download and Install updates” and click Next. Wait for several minutes for the updates to download.
If during this process, the update asks you for a product key, you are using the wrong version of Windows 10 to upgrade. Like if you are attempting to install Windows 10 Home over your existing Windows 8.1 Pro.
- Click Accept software and wait for couple of minutes.
- Click Install. This will take about half an hour or so. After the operating system has finished with the install, you will be presented with a screen showing your username.
- Now Click Next button.
- Select Use Express Settings.
- Click next again
- Log in to your Windows 10 PC now.
