Boxy is currently the best Inbox app for Mac

When Google first introduced us with Inbox, it promised to give us a more advanced and smarter version of Gmail. A couple of months later, the company fulfilled its promise and is still working hard to make Inbox the best app for the next generation. While Inbox might be the smarter version for Gmail, but it is unlikely that Google will ever make a desktop app for it. Just like Gmail, Inbox will be also a web app first service. But that doesn’t mean you will not get any desktop app to play with.

Thanks to a pair of developers, you can now use an Inbox app on your computer. Called Boxy, the app basically turns Inbox into a Mac app. The overall user interface of Boxy is very identical to Inbox on the web. You have a single column list of emails, with similar colors, quick read and respond options (just like Inbox on web) and left sidebar with all the quick options. Even the top bar is same as Inbox on the web.

Overall, it looks like Boxy just loads Inbox on the web on your Mac and transforms it into a native app. So, that you can use it as Inbox app on your computer. But still, Boxy is currently the best Inbox app you can get for your Mac OS X running computer.

Just like other apps, Boxy has some limitations too. While the user interface looks clean and impressive, but sometimes the animations can be sluggish. Another bad thing is that as Inbox currently doesn’t have any option for multiple accounts, so if you want to work on two emails in Boxy then you will have to load the second one.

So, why you should download Boxy?

Ya! I understand that question. As if Boxy just loads the Inbox for Web and transforms it into a native app, then why we should even download it? We can just continue using Inbox on the web?

The answer is because of the extra Boxy features which you will not find on Inbox. The developers of the app have added a few features which you will only find in an app. Like for example, support for native desktop notifications, a useful sidebar, a dedicated reading mode (making email reading better) and the most important one, the ability to keep Inbox right on your desktop, without the need of opening your browser.

For the bugs, well every app his own set of bugs and limitations. And the developers are already working to make Boxy better. They are fixing that animation problem, improving its performance and planning to make account switching more easier.

Overall, Boxy is a good app for those who are searching for Inbox like email app. But as far as a dedicated desktop email app is concerned, it is still not there yet.

You can download Boxy for your Mac from the Mac App Store. And as it is not a free to use app, so you will have to pay $4.99 to get one.
