Facebook Reportedly Working On A Camera App

It appears like Facebook wants video making easier on its platform. According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, the social networking giant is currently working on a new standalone camera app, which will allow users to stream Facebook Live videos or record their own. While Facebook refused to comment, but we are expecting to see a mixture of Snapchat and Periscope features on this Facebook Camera app.

Facebook is currently betting big on mobile videos and Facebook Live. In a step in that direction, the company also introduced a new special videos tab on its main app and made Live streaming a lot similar to Periscope, Twitter’s popular Live streaming app. A camera app may help Facebook to better compete with Snapchat, the company which is currently dominating the mobile video space.

While it is good to see that Facebook is preparing itself for the future, but It could fail too. As if you remember, except Messenger, almost every standalone app that Facebook build, died after a couple of years of their release. Like for example Slingshot, Rooms, and Riff, they all were removed just a couple of months after their launch. And then there are some which are available but not that popular - Paper, Facebook Home launcher and more.

This won’t be the first time when Facebook will be launching a standalone photo app. The company did that in 2012, but it was later killed after Facebook acquired Instagram. Hopefully, things will be different for this camera app.

Before you start expecting big things, please note that the app is currently in its experimental stage. And as the report further notes, it may never see a finished public release. But seeing Facebook's current attempt to make its more than 1 billion users share more videos, we are expecting to see this app by the end of this year.
