Opera adds free VPN feature to its browser
Opera, one of the most popular web browsers in the world, is adding a new VPN feature. Thanks to that, now Opera web browser users can easily enjoy free unlimited VPN on their computer. With this Opera is now world’s first mainstream browser to offer a free VPN functionality to users.
"Now, you don’t have to download VPN extensions or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi," said Opera in a blog post.
VPN, which stands for Virtual Private Network, gives users an option to hide their browsing data. A VPN not only hides user’s original IP address but also allows them to access geo-restricted contents, So, for example, an Indian user can use VPN service and access American Netflix or Spotify, which are usually restricted.
There are many VPN offering services available in the market, but most of them cost money and some that are free have hidden costs. As Opera notes, more than half a billion people have tried or are currently using VPNs to browse the Internet, so the service is pretty popular among users. And that is why Opera decided to add a free VPN in its web browser.
While Opera is still one of the respected and major browsers, but its market share has been declining over the years. That might be because of Google’s highly popular Chrome browser, which currently eats 60% of the market share, while on the other hand Opera is just at 2%. Following to Chrome, we have other major players like Apple’s Safari, Microsoft IE, Mozilla Firefox and then Opera.

Opera is currently targeting more at emerging markets, with great potential and fast growing user base. The company’s new VPN service will definitely help it to expand its user base in markets like Asia, where state censorship and nationwide firewalls are among some of the big problems for the users.
